پس از رحلت حضرت محمد(ص) به علت شرایط خاصی كه در آن زمان به وجود آمد، علی ابن ابیطالب(ع) برای ایجاد وحدت سكوت اختیار كرد و تنها به وظایف فردی و سازنده خود در جهت ترویج آداب دینی پرداخت و آنگاه كه به خلافت رسید، خلافت ایشان در مدینه دوران تبلور اسلام واقعی، اجرای عدالت اسلامی، مبارزه با بدعت ها، از بین بردن تبعیض ها در بین تازه مسلمانان با صحابه و توابع رسول خدا(ص)، بركناری حكمرانان نالایق، تقسیم عادلانه بیت المال و اجرای دقیق و درست سنت رسول الله (ص) بود.

این دوران همزمان با وقوع جنگ های فراوانی همچون صفین، جمل و نهروان بود، كه هركدام نشانه آرمان والای نخستین پیشوای شیعیان جهان در برقراری اسلام ناب محمدی به شمار می رفت و با وجود فشارهای سیاسی گوناگون و وقوع جنگ‌های سخت و طولانی در طول پنج سال حكومت ایشان، حضرت علی(ع) خدمات ارزشمند و بی سابقه ای در تاریخ اسلام به مسلمانان ارایه كرد.
